Meghalaya government scraps flyover project; Skywalk to come up in Shillong

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has decided to scrap the long-pending project of constructing a flyover form Rap’s Mansion, Shillong near Secretariat building to Them Iew Mawlong as the government has not been able to make headway with the project for the past many years.

However, the government is now contemplating on a new project which is to construct a ‘Skywalk’ from Barik to Lachumier and from Barik to Secretariat.

Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling informed that the project to construct flyovers had to be scrapped as the government was unable to acquire land and there were objections from various quarters. He added that this project was conceptualized during 2004-05. But owing to land issues, the project had to be scrapped.

However, the Minister said that the government still has an intention to construct a flyover from Bivar Road to Polo.

Dongling said that survey work is underway to find a location to construct a parking lot at Barik and to connect it through a ‘Skywalk’ from Barik to Lachumier and from Barik to Secretariat.

He informed that the government has handed the survey project to construct the ‘Skywalk’ to the Urban Affairs department and PWD (Buildings) engineers. On the increasing traffic congestion in Shillong which has irked the public including tourists, he said that the government will take up the matter with an objective to tackle traffic congestion in the city. The traffic congestion in Shillong has increased with every passing year as many new vehicles are plying on the roads; and this has affected commuters. Besides, traffic congestion doubles during the rainy seasons.

While public transport (by bus) is one way to ease congestion and traffic in the city. However, not a single school has come forward to work together with the State government till date to the proposed use of buses by the educational institutions for fetching and dropping school students.
