Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Choosing Candidates

Shillong: Ahead of the General elections in the country, The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has started the process of soliciting interested candidates keen to contest for the Shillong and Tura Parliamentary seats. This is an indicator that it will not be an easy ride for the two times sitting Congress M.P from Shillong Vincent Pala. Going by the source within the Congress party, H.D.R Lyngdoh, the four times Congress MLA who lost in last assembly elections has shown his interest to contest the upcoming parliamentary polls. Even the sitting M.P Vincent Pala has categorically told The Sentinel that he is going to vie for the party ticket and to retain the seat for the third time.

A top MPCC functionary told The Sentinel on condition of anonymity that the process of choosing the candidates has just begun and the insinuations doing the rounds about who is the favourite has no bearings. “We have only distributed the circular to all the districts to get the names of the people who are interested to contest the parliamentary polls”, stated the MPCC working President James Lyngdoh on Wednesday, adding, “the process will be completed by the end of this month.” He further said that the name of the candidates for the two parliamentary seats will be collectively decided and should be approved by the AICC.

Going by the developments in the recent past, the sitting Congress M.P from Shillong may have a torrid time. His visit to the NPP office in Shillong to congratulate Conrad K Sangma on his victory as a member of the state legislative assembly has been viewed with wary eyes in a section of the state Congress leadership.

Pala had then said that it was more of a good political gesture on the then colleague in Parliament and nothing that will wither him away from the principles of the Congress party.
