Meghalaya St Edmund’s College Teachers Resort to Indefinite Strike

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya College Teacher’s Association (MCTA) unit of St Edmund’s College has gone on an indefinite strike to protest against the termination of one of their colleague.

The teachers on Monday staged a protest inside the campus of St Edmund’s college in support of the teacher.

President of the St Edmund’s unit of the MCTA, Malcolm Tariang said that the protest against the management of the college was brewing since 2012.

Tariang said that the teacher was terminated just because he participated in a black flag protest in the college in May.

He said that the teacher who was teaching in the college post of the Sociology Department for the last 10 years and recently he had applied for the sanctioned post (UGC) after one of the senior lecturer retired.

“He was expecting to be confirmed into the post but in the last week of June he was served with a termination letter,” Tariang said.

The president of the MCTA unit said that the governing body in the termination letter mentioned that he is being relieved of his job since they were not satisfied with his overall performance. Tariang stated that the interview board a month earlier found him fit for the post.

A senior teacher of the college Prof FF Ropmay said, “The governing body has been usurped by the sponsorship body and other members especially the teacher’s representative does not have a view.”

Ropmay also said that the government representative does not attend the governing body meetings.

Urging the management of the college to reinstate the teacher, Ropmay demanded the removal of the Service Rules, 2018.
