Mizoram: Narendra Modi on a Day Long Visit to Mizoram ahead of Assembly Elections

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a day-long visit to the poll-bound state of Mizoram today. Modi will address a public meeting at Lunglei, which is the headquarters of one of the three district where the Brus hails from, on Friday.

Talking to the media about the PM's visit, President of Mizoram unit of BJP, JV Hulna said, that " PM will not hold the public Rally at Aizawal. he will address a rally at Lunglei. He will also have a small meeting with the leaders of the Young Mizo Association(YMA) and the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuikhawam Pawl(MHIP).

YMA, the apex body of the Mizos, and the MHIP, a Mizo women's organisation, are the two influential civil society bodies of Mizoram.

It may be mentioned that Congress had earlier threatened to not allow Modi's rally to be held at the Assam Rifle's ground. Confirming about this Spokesperson of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee Lallina Chhunga said, "Congress has resolved to stop any public rally by PM Modi here at the Assam Rifle's ground." BJP was reportedly planning to organise Modi's rally at the Assam Rifle's ground here. It is the venue that has become a bone of contention.

Congress accused BJP of forcing the Assam Rifle's to deny it permission for holding party President Rahul Gandhi's rally at the Assam Rifle's ground. Accusing the BJP of controlling the Assam Rifle, Chhunga said, "BJP controls the Assam Rifles. Even the Aizawal Deputy Commissioner wrote a strongly worded letter to the Assam Rifles. But they refused to give us the permit". On Tuesday, Rahul's rally was eventually moved to Mizoram Armed Police parade ground at Mualpui on the outskirts of Aizwal.

Raising questions on how BJP can get permission to hold its rally if Congress is denied permission for the Rahul Gandhi's Rally, Chhunga further added " They did not allow Rahul Gandhi to address a public rally at the ground at the very last minute, citing Union Home Ministry intervention. How can Modi hold a rally at the same place?.'

Congress said the Assam Rifle's had rejected another request by the party for Rahul's rally, which was earlier scheduled for October 5, with an explanation that the ground is meant to be used "for sports purpose only". It may be mentioned that on December 16 last year, Modi had addressed a public rally at the Assam Rifle's ground here during his first visit to Mizoram since he took charge as PM

The BJP's central leadership has been focusing on minority-dominated areas in its campaign in Christian-majority Mizoram, where it has never won a seat. Party president Amit Christian-majority Mizoram, where it has never won a seat. Party President Amit Shah skipped the manifesto release here on Tuesday and addressed rallies at Lanwgtlai and Vairengte, both the districts from where bru voter's hail from. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh went to Mara-dominated Siaha, Bru-dominated Mamit and Chakma dominated Chawngte-Kamalanagar
