MLA Sanbor Shullai of South Shillong requested transfer of Garrison Ground to public

SHILLONG, July 25: The local MLA of South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday called on Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and submitted a memorandum with a request that the Union Ministry of Defence addresses the grievances of the residents of Shillong cantonment area while seeking the transfer of the Garrison Ground.

On the transfer of the Garrison Ground for public utility, Shullai said that the ground is located in the heart of the city and its one of the oldest ground used by the people of Greater Laban and other localities of Shillong for various sports, social and other activities.

“The Laban Sports Club which has recently completed 110 years of its existence is the oldest club associated with this ground. The ground has been utilized by the public until it was closed by the defence authority. Hence there is the need for the ground to once again be transferred for public utility,” he said.

Shullai informed that the ground had also hosted Ranji Trophy matches from 1964 when Assam cricket team played against United Provinces cricket team.

The local MLA also apprised the Chief Minister on the need to upgrade the Shillong cantonment school and hospital, fund allocation for various health programmes and developmental issues.
