More powers for Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Mooted

SHILLONG: NPP candidate from Laban-Mawprem constituency Mitchel Wankhar has stated that there is a need to further expand the functions and powers of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Wankhar pointed out that with the district council in place and with its powers intact, the indigenous people of the State should not face any difficulty. “However, at present, the Iewduh market, which is supposed to be the source of income of many are being occupied by people from outside the State,” he said.

He also said there is a need to have more stringent laws to be put in place by the district council when it comes to business conducted by non-tribals. “We have already minimized the influx of outsiders taking away our businesses and in time we can also solve the problem of mix marriage,” he said.
