MPCC condemns Centre for undermining Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Monday condemned the tendency of the Present Union Government to undermine the greatness of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and others by observing their birth and death anniversaries as some other occasions.

“… including clandestine attempts to observe the Holy Occasion of 25th December as Good Governance Day and Good Friday as Digital India Day,” the MPCC said.

These observations were made during the 101st birth anniversary celebration of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi held at Congress Bhawan, Shillong.

The meeting also deplored that the BJP/RSS, who could not have any one to match the charisma of Congress leaders, have attempted to “hijack” Sadar Vallab Bhai Patel, as their hero, who was in fact, the first Congress Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India, and who had banned RSS following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

The meeting also condemned that when Saradar Patel had given the just two lettered Slogan “One India” in order to unify the country, BJP and RSS have been distorting its spirit by trying to extend his slogan as “One India, One Culture, One Religion”, which is an attempt to divide the country on communal lines and it is the biggest disrespect to Sadar Patel.

Those who spoke on the occasion included Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, MPCC President, Process T Sawkmie, MLA, Dr Manash Das Gupta, General Secretary Meghalaya PCC and Mebaailang Kharkongor, President, Shillong City Mahila Congress.

The speakers, while paying glowing tributes to the memories of Late Indira Gandhi, spoke of the determination and courage of the great “iron lady” of India, who never hesitated to take steps, when it was the interest of the country and the people.
