Nirav Modi's Bungalow Demolished Using Explosives

Guwahati: Billionaire Nirav Modi's bungalow situated in Maharashtra's Alibaug has been demolished today with a huge quantity of explosives.

A district administration officer today said that the bungalow costs around Rs. 100 crore and the 33,000 square foot luxurious bungalow has been built illegally, violated coastal regulation zone (CRZ) norms and the state's regulations as well.

The authorities said that the foundation of the structure was so strong that they have to struggle to bring it down using heavy machinery which would have taken months and to speed up the process, they decided to demolish the building through a controlled explosion using dynamite.

Raigad district collector Vijay Suryawanshi said that the demolish was successful. He said that the excavators were used to drill into the thick concrete pillars of the bungalow to make space for fixing the detonators.

The demolition team releases the drone footage which shows that the palatial structure where the billionaire Modi used to throw parties and host product shows near a forested beach collapsed in a cloud of dust.

The bungalow has a driveway, high-metal fencing and a huge security gate and it was built partly as a ground plus one structure. The bungalow includes a swimming pool, resort-like slides and expensive fittings. The authorities said that the bungalow was declared illegal along with 58 other structures that flouted all environment norms.

The demolition was taken up following a Bombay High Court order on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by non-profit Shamburaje Yuva Kranti in 2009 demanding action against illegal bungalows, hotels and resorts violating the high-tide and low-tide zones in small villages dotting the beaches of Raigad.

Billionaire Nirav Modi is one of the main accused in the 13000 crore Punjab National Bank scam along with his uncle Mehul Choksi. Modi had initially approached the High Court to stop the demolition as the bungalow was among the properties attached by the Enforcement Directorate after the PNB scam surfaced.

Modi got permission to construct only on 376 square meters but the bungalow was constructed in the area which exceeds more than 1081 square meters.
