NRC Claims and Objections Submission date Extended till December 31

Guwahati: In a response to Assam government’s plea, the Supreme Court has ordered for an extension of the last date of claims and complains submission date for inclusion of names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC). the new last date for the submission of claims and complains is December 31, 2018.

It was just on Monday when the Assam government had appealed to the Supreme Court for the extension of the date and now, the SC has granted an extension on Wednesday giving a little relief to the ones whose names are not yet included in the NRC.

Before this, on November 1, a bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Nariman had approved the Centre’s draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for submission of claims. Previously, December 15 was announced as the last date for filing claims.

As cited by advocate Shuvodeep Roy who filed the application for the extension of date, the main reason for the extension is the panchayat elections that are currently in action in the State. As the process of claims and complain submission needs more time, especially for the semi-literate and illiterate persons while filling up the forms, the dates were requested to be extended.
