NRC Update: Extension of Biometric Deadline Likely

GUWAHATI: The deadline for biometric enrollment of those who participated in the claims and objections hearings of the NRC update exercise, might be extended beyond July 15.

Biometric enrollment of 80 per cent of participators in the claims and objections hearing exercises has so far been completed. Even though the State Home and Political department had asked the Deputy Commissioners to complete the enrollment within July 15, going by the present status of progress the deadline might be extended to ensure that no one is left out from the biometric-collection exercise.

The hearing process on ‘Claims and Objections’ commenced from February 15. Altogether 36.2 lakh people applied for the claims process while objections have been filed against 2 lakh persons whose names had appeared in the complete draft NRC. Completion of biometric enrollment has been delayed as the process initially went slow due to various reasons. Meanwhile, Dispur recently instructed that those having AADHAAR cards should not undergo biometric enrollment exercise.

One other hand, claims and hearing of over one lakh people whose names appeared in the recent additional exclusion list to draft NRC, are going on simultaneously in the State. Names of 1,02,462 persons who were found ineligible to be included in the final NRC, have been included in the additional exclusion list to draft NRC. The names of these persons were, however, included in the complete draft NRC published last year. The final NRC will be published on July 31.
