Numaligarh Tea Estate mob tries to attack suspected child lifter

Numaligarh: The child lifter rumour raised its ugly head again and created a law-and-order situation at Numaligarh Tea Estate under Numaligarh Police Outpost on Tuesday night.

Locals witnessed an unidentified person trying to enter one of the houses in the tea garden labour line. The situation turned worse when a rumour spread among the residents that a child abductor had entered the tea garden. Hundreds of people came out with machetes and spears in their hands and tried to attack the suspected person who was confined in the tea garden office. A team of Numaligarh police outpost and paramilitary force reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. But the situation worsened when police arrived and attempted to rescue the person.

The mob hit the police personnel with stone-brick pieces. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob and finally succeeded in rescuing the man. Officer-in-charge Madhurjya Dadhora, constable Hafizur Ahmed and other personnel of Numaligarh Police Outpost sustained injury during the clash. The suspected person is currently in police custody and is believed to be mentally-challenged. In the past, neighboring areas of Numaligarh had also witnessed such series of events in which villagers had unlawfully confined and beaten up people from other States who had come to work as labourers and mentally-challenged persons.
