SHILLONG: The Department of Music, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) in collaboration with the Department of Christian Studies and Peace Initiatives of Martin Luther Christian University, organized a musical event at the Ward's Lake premises here on Saturday. The theme of the event was 'Peace through Music'. The media partner was Red FM.

People strolling by the lakeside or while pedaling the boats on the lake were treated to soothing music in the forms of soulful, classical, and western with the traditional and indigenous mix in it.

This event has become a popular fixture aptly called 'Music by The Lake' since the department first performed it in the premises of the Ward's Lake way back in 2014.

The main objective of this year's 'Music by the Lake' event was to spread awareness about the power of music towards bringing in peace across the world.

Speaking at the event, the Head of the Department of Christian Studies and Peace Initiatives, Rev Elungkiebe Zeliang stressed that "conflicts all over the world and even in our city affect the lives of all ages" and added that "peace is the need of the hour if we are to survive as a society in the world."

He pointed out that musicians across different generations and different genres have always used their musical talents to spread the message of love and peace.

The performances included songs with the message of peace and were performed by not only the students of the Department of Music but also by the students from other departments of the University who were taking music as one of their minor papers.

While the performances regaled the public visiting the lake, the students were able to utilize a different kind of stage for building their confidence and using their music to attract the audience.

One of the objectives of this event is to provide a platform for students to showcase their musical skills and talents. It further allows the student-performers to perform experimentally.
