SHILLONG: The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Meghalaya rued that despite 50 percent of the seats being reserved for the locals, the institute, however, is not getting ‘good’ response from the students of Meghalaya. This was revealed by NIT director, Bibhuti Bhusan Biswal.

“We are disappointed since we are not getting students from Meghalaya especially when 50 percent of the seats are reserved for the local students here,” Bhusan said while speaking at a function to felicitate students with the “U Tirot Sing Best Students Award”.

The NIT director said that the students need to fulfill certain parameters like the Joint Entrance Examination – JEE Main to be admitted to the institute.

He further informed that the general students need to get 75 percent in their qualifying exams whereas SC/ST students should secure 65 percent.

Informing that intake capacity of the institute is 150 students, Biswal said that 50 percent of the intake capacity should come from within the State. “We are contemplating to write to the Centre for reducing the qualifying percentage for the local students,” the NIT Director said while adding that they are also planning to increase the intake capacity of NIT, Meghalaya from 150 to 600.
