Priyanka Gandhi chickened out from contesting against Prime Minister: Arun Jaitley

Guwahati: Union Finance Minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley alleged that the newly appointed Congress General Secretary in-charge of East Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi quietly chickened out from contesting against the Prime Minister from Varanasi.

Arun Jaitley said on Thursday that Priyanka has rejoiced in giving daily bytes to the media that she was ready to take on the Prime Minister. Jaitley in a blog post said that Priyanka's brother and Congress President Rahul Gandhi claimed that the party was building up the suspense for an eventual thriller and that she had obviously chickened out of the contest.

Jaitley has commented hours after the Congress announced Ajay Rai as its candidate from Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency.

In his blog post, Jaitley further said that he was deeply disappointed with the Congress party's decision of not fielding Priyanka from Varanasi. The last two months that she has been in the public life has driven home the point. He said that India has changed, dynasties don't matter.

He further said that India's conventional wisdom has been the myth of 'Priyanka will make a difference' was worth a lakh. He also stated that he was sad that India has been denied the opportunity to establish that it does not accept inexperienced dynasts with no other credentials adding that there is one additional point that this episode has been established.

The Finance Minister said that it is only juvenile politics where a family lives under an illusion that people will accept it irrespective of credentials which persuade people to build a climax of Priyanka taking on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then suffer the wrath of the anti-climax.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, on the other hand, said that it is not necessary for us as whom Congress is fielding from Varanasi but the issue is that people of the constituency are blessed from where Modiji is contesting.

Narendra Modi is going to file his nomination papers from Varanasi today.
