Punjab Team Satisfied By Security Assurance of Sikh Community In Shillong

Shillong: The five-member Punjab government delegation headed by the Minister of Water Resources Sukjinder Singh Randhawa termed the meeting with the Meghalaya Home Minister James K Sangma as a fruitful one. The Punjab delegation arrived in Shillong following concerns over the security of the Sikh community residing in Shillong, especially those in the Punjabi Lane area.

Speaking to newsmen soon after the meeting with the Meghalaya Home Minister, Punjab MP Jasbir Singh Gill said, “We have come here to ensure that justice prevails and the Home Minister’s assurances has been satisfactory ”.

“Our understanding is that the State Government is sincere to have a long lasting solution to the problem. The government should initiate more confidence-building measures to instill confidence in the community”, said Gill.

On the issue of illegal settlers on the land, the Punjab government delegation refused to comment except for stating that “Let the court take a decision.” The delegation, however, underlined the need to guard against attempts by vested groups to create further problems.

During the meeting, delegation head and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa handed Amarinder Singh’s letter addressed to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to the Home Minister.
