Rahul Gandhi Meets Alwar Gang Rape Victim Today

Guwahati: Congress President Rahul Gandhi today met the woman who was gang-raped in Rajasthan’s Alwar on April 26 last and promised swift action against the culprits and said that justice will be done to the woman.

While addressing the media at Alwar on Thursday, Rahul Gandhi said that he spoke to Ashok Gehlot ji after he heard of the incident. “This is not a political issue for me and justice will be done to the woman and strict action will be taken against the culprits,” Gandhi said.

The Congress government in Rajasthan has faced criticism by the opposition over lack of prompt action in the case. It has been reported that the Rajasthan police allegedly delayed the filing of the First Information Report (FIR) which has been filed only after a purported video of the sexual assault began circulating on social media. The video allegedly showed that five men had raped the woman after assaulting her husband and filmed the incident.

Earlier, in election rallies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had referred to the gang-rape incident saying that the Congress government in Rajasthan had done nothing to give justice to the victim. Modi also asked the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati as why she has not withdrawn support from the Congress government in Rajasthan. The BSP chief later hit back at Modi accusing him of indulging in dirty politics.

The woman who was gangraped on April 26 is a member of the Dalit Community was riding pillion on a motorcycle with her husband when the accused who were also on motorcycles laid them and took them to a field. They allegedly thrashed the husband and raped his wife in front of him.

It has been claimed by the husband that they have informed about the incident on April 30 but the FIR wasn’t lodged till May 7. However, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot claims that the FIR was lodged on May 2.

Hitting out at the Prime Minister, Gehlot said that he tells many lies and that the Rajasthan government had taken measures to ensure the survivor would get employment.

Meanwhile, police said that all the six accused have been arrested including the individual who filmed the crime and threatened the survivor that he would share the clip on social media if she went to the police.
