Raids against illicit liquor in Cachar district

Silchar: As 155 people died in the incident of spurious liquor consumption in Golaghat district, the Cachar district administration has intensified steps to conduct raids at specific locations to find people with illicit liquor trade.

According to Sunil Sinha, Superintendent at the Excise Department Cachar, following the orders of the Cachar Deputy Commissioner, the department conducted eight raids in major suspected areas since February 22 including Rampur in Kathal Tea Garden, Meherpur, Tapaban Nagar, Chengkhuri, Janata Bazar, Lailapur, Sadagram, Shantipur areas of Dholai constituency, Lalang Tea Garden, Jaroiltala in Borkhola constituency. Excise Officials informed that 31 cases have been registered till February 24. 22 persons have been arrested so far. Also, Sinha informed that 100 litres of Illicit Distilled liquor have been seized and sizeable Fermanted Wash which have caused the deaths have been destroyed at some places. Moreover, he informed that seven distilling aparatus were recovered from some places and Indian Made Foreign Liquor 17.64 litres have been recovered so far.

Also Sinha informed that seizures involved in the process are: 100 litres of i/d liquor, 1175 litres of f/wash, 7 sets of distilling apparatus and 17.64 litres of IMFL were seized. Apart from this, sizeable quantity of i/d liquor and f/wash were also destroyed on the spot of detection. In fact Cachar Excise is conducting intensive raids after receiving instruction from the Commissioner of Excise Assam.
