Rajya Sabha Postponed: Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 could not be introduced

Guwahati: In a big relief to the people of the north-eastern states, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 could not be introduced in the Rajya Sabha today as the session had to be kept postponed till an uncertain period. The huge disruptions by the opposition members, the Wednesday’s schedule had to be kept postponed even on the last day of the 16th Lok Sabha.

As pre-scheduled, Home Minister Rajnath Singh was scheduled to present the bill which could not be tabled as the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, M. Venkiah Naidu adjourned the house at 12.50 pm.

As the CAB was being strongly opposed by the people of the North-east states, especially the people of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram; this new development in regard to the Bill has certainly come as a big relief.

The imposition of the CAB would mean providing legal citizenship to the people of Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan who had come illegally to India. This was, therefore, feared to have posed as a big threat to the northeastern states’ people.
