SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) on Wednesday staged a sit-in demonstration against the long-pending border dispute with Assam. The sit-in demonstration was held at the Additional Secretariat parking lot.

Speaking to mediapersons, HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani reminded that the National People’s Party (NPP) during the 2018 Assembly election had promised to resolve the vexed issue.

We expect the NPP to fulfill the election promises since it is leading the Government in the State,” Kharbani said. The HANM president said Assam is encroaching upon areas falling under Meghalaya due to the absence of a demarcated boundary.

Kharbani pointed out that Assam is encroaching upon in Langpih and other areas in Block I and Block II. He also said Meghalaya was a soft State and the Assam government had on several occasions shown its aggressiveness towards the State.

The HANM president also stated that the boundary issue has remained pending since the inception of the State in 1972. “The Government in the past has ended up setting committees to deliberate on the boundary dispute.

But no one knows about the fate of these committees,” Kharbani said. He also said people should be given a choice in the form of a referendum to decide whether they want to be with Meghalaya or Assam if both the States are not able to resolve the long pending boundary issue.
