SHILLONG: The Central Executive Committee of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) along with its counterparts from Ri-Bhoi district today urged Home Minister James Sangma to dispatch security personnel to Umru and Khlieh Umwang village under Block-II after the Assam Police had allegedly demolished a community hall and two houses constructed under the Indira Awaas Yojana and an SSA school building on August 27.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the Home Minister, HYC general secretary Roykupar Synrem said, “We are concerned with the recent incident in the area and we have requested his intervention as many of the local residents in the area are in a state of fear and panic.” He said even the headmen of the area had to leave their villages as people from Assam would cross over and disturb the peace by threatening them from implementing the different schemes sanctioned by the government of Meghalaya.

“The Home Minister has assured us that soon he will hold discussion with the DGP of the state to take stock of the situation and if needed he will dispatch security personnel to the area however we have demanded that the government should deploy police personnel at Khlieh Umwang and Umru village to ensure that peace and stability returns to the area,” he said.

Informing that at present Meghalaya has a police outpost at Mawlasnai, he said, “However there are only around four or five personnel at the outpost and hence we are of the opinion that this outpost is not fully functioning as even the Assam police as able to set up their own outpost at Umwang village.”

According to him, the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi has comminuted with the DC of Kamrup district however the DC of Kamrup had informed that he has no knowledge of the incident which happened at Umru village. “However the villages have alleged that the SSA school and other prosperity in the area was demolished by the Assam police,” he said.
