Shillong, June 5: After visits by Delhi MLA and general secretary of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Delhi Gurdwara Committee president Manjit Singh, a delegation of the Punjab Government, the United Sikh Organisation (USO), visited Shillong on Tuesday to assess the ground reality following the May 31 violence.

The five-member delegation of the USO met Meghalaya Home Minister, James K Sangma in Shillong.

Speaking to media persons after meeting Sangma, the USO maintained that the question of shifting the residents of Sweeper’s Colony from Them ïew Mawlong (Harijan colony) is not acceptable to them.

“The question of shifting them (Sikh population) from the existing location is not acceptable to us. We would like the Government to propose an alternative solution to this problem,” a member of the organisation Mohinderjit Singh told waiting pressmen.

Singh pointed out that Sikhs who live all around the world and even in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan have never been asked to leave their homes. According to him even Sikhs living in countries like Iran and Iraq were never asked to leave.

He further pointed out that the Sikh community living all over the world are ready to fund for construction of multi-storied buildings in the existing location if the Government gives them permission.

“We had in fact requested the Home Minister to allow them to construct beautiful apartments for the Sikh here. So the question of the Sweeper’s Colony of being unhygienic will not remain,” the United Sikh member said.

He also informed that they have also requested the Home Minister to allow the top chiefs of the Sikh Community to have a meeting with the local Sikhs living in the city to understand their problems and resolve the ongoing crisis in a peaceful manner.
