Social Lineage Bill 2018 introduced in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC)

SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on the first day of the special session introduced the Social Linage Bill 2018, the KHADC (Inner Line as adopted from the Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873) Regulation Bill, 2018 and few more bills for discussion in the House.

The Bills which were introduced on Thursday for discussion would be tabled on the final day of the special session (26 October) for a resolution to be passed by the members of the House.

Interesting with the resignation of five MDCs from the Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) the House witnessed no opposition.
It may be mentioned that former KHADC Chief PN Syiem was the lone member in the opposition as all the PDF MDCs, including Grace Mary Kharpuri, have extended their support to the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA).

However, he was not present during the session. The KHADC Chief HS Shylla moved the resolution to urge the Governor of Meghalaya to apply the provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 as adopted and modified in the form of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Inner Line as adopted from the Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873) Regulation Bill, 2018.
Shylla said the situation in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District has developed into an alarming one out of the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam resulting in mass migration of illegal immigrants.

The CEM also introduced the amended Bill, Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (First Amendment), Bill, 2018 which features a special case of patriliny during the special session held on Thursday.
