Itanagar: A ten feet and six inches statue of musical icon of Assam Dr Bhupen Hazarika, will be unveiled at picturesque Bolung Village in Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh on December 15 next.

The Bronze casting statue, a distinguished creation of sculptor of North East India Biren Singha, would be unveiled by Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu and Assam Chief Minister Sorbananda Sonowal in presence of eminent personalities from both the states.

Bolung village is said to be the birth place of the legendary singer.

Addressing media persons here on Saturday, Sahitya Academy awardee and President of Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) Y D Thongchi informed that considering Dr Hazarika’s contributions to the state, the APLS proposed for erecting a statue of him and accordingly submitted a proposal to the then Chief Minister Nabam Tuki during 2014.

“Tuki during 2015-16 allocated an amount of 30 lakh to the Research department under its state annual development agenda (SADA) and to execute the project, a scheme was prepared by the department. After observing all codal formalities, the work has been awarded to Singha,” Thongchi said.

He added that despite several bottlenecks, the statue had been transported to the village just after the inauguration ceremony of the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Bridge at Dhola, which was marked as a co-relation of the event.

Thongchi also lauded the family members of Gora Pertin, an eminent social worker of Bolung village who came voluntarily to donate the necessary land.
