Storms and lulls

Staff Correspondent

Shillong, June 1: Heavy stone pelting by a crowd of over 4,000 people at the police began around 11 this morning and continued till the filing of this report.

While the volatile situation seemed to stabilize by this morning, a group of people started to gather at Mawkhar and the locations nearby. Sensation crept in and they wanted to move to a lane inhabited by a certain community. The Police obstruction led to heavy brick batting. The police had to resort to countless teargas shelling till this hour.

There was a brief lull after the pacification bid made by magistrates but in the meantime, with a large group of youths armed with sticks appearing on the scene, the situation turned for the worse. All hell broke loose as a series of tear gas cannons were shelled to control the marauding mob.

Till the filing of this report, the situation was extremely volatile from Jaiaw-Mawkhar to Mothphran area. The big crowd that had gathered has not dispersed and the situation might further deteriorate if proper police re-enforcement is not pressed in forthright. Significantly, it is the social media that has apparently been the mischief monger. The person who was allegedly assaulted is reportedly in a hospital and not dead.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the entire city to prevent further escalation of the violence. Officially, no statistics is available on the number of people injured, but ground zero suggests that at least 12 people, including policemen, have been injured in the ongoing clashes.
