Supreme Court Gives 7 Days To Seek Anticipatory Bail Of Rajeev Kumar

Guwahati: The Supreme Court today withdrew its protection from arresting former Kolkata Police Chief Rajeev Kumar in the Saradha chit fund scam case and gave seven days to get anticipatory bail from an appropriate court.

The Supreme Court said that the order of February 5 for granting interim protection to the police chief Rajeev Kumar will continue for seven days from Friday so that he approach the competent court for legal remedy which means that getting anticipatory bail in this case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi ruled that the CBI would be free to act in accordance with law in the case if the Kolkata Police Chief doesn’t manage to get the arrest shield.

The ruling of the top court on Friday has come as a setback to the Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee two days ahead of the last round of voting that comes a fortnight after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted in a sealed cover three documents that purportedly establish former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar’s role in the alleged tampering of evidence in the Saradha and other chit fund cases.

The top court on February had granted interim protection from arrest to Rajeev Kumar but told him to face questioning by the CBI in Shillong as according to the judges it was a neutral place.

The CBI told the top court that it wanted custodial interrogation after five days of grilling him. The CBI wanted the interrogation of the senior police officer as it has seen to be close to Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee because he wasn’t coming clean on his role.

The CBI further alleged that there was a prima facie evidence that Rajeev Kumar who once headed the special investigating team set up by Bengal police to probe the Saradha chit fund scam.
