Think-Tank Behind ULFA Plans: Special Source In State Police

GUWAHATI: The ULFA-I executed its blueprint by triggering a grenade attack with military precision on RG Baruah Road in Guwahati on Wednesday last.

The blueprint that was drawn a few days back, according to a special source in the State police force, is a well-designed one. According to the source, the outfit kept one of it is over ground cadres at Zoo-Tiniali only to observe the movement of security personnel. The person who lobbed the grenade at the security personnel near Central Guwahati Mall on RG Baruah Road rode pillion on a scooty that dropped him on the opposite side of Mall. According to the source, the rider of the scooty then went a few yards towards the Ganeshguri side and kept waiting at a walking distance for the grenade thrower. Hurling the grenade at the security personnel who were busy in checking on the other side of the divider, the pillion rider walked to the scooty that drove him to Ganeshguri. From there he was taken to Khanapara in a motorbike by another person, the source said. From Khanapara, the grenade thrower boarded an upper Assam-bound traveler and went away.

As of now five persons, including actress Jahnabi Saikia and Pranamoy Rajguru, have been nabbed in connection with the grenade attack.

Talking to the media on Saturday, Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said: “Former ULFA cadre Amrit Ballab Goswami is a bomb expert. He supplies materials for making bombs. He extended a helping hand in the Wednesday’s blast in Guwahati also. He has been taken to Guwahati from Merapani in Golaghat district.”

The city police commissioner further said: “Indramani Bora of Nagaon visited Guwahati some six to seven days ago and drew the plan for the grenade attack with Jahnabi Saikia and Pranamoy Rajguru. He has also been taken to Guwahati.”

On Chinmony Lahkar, who was arrested from Christianbasti in Guwahati, the police commissioner said: “He’s a fresh recruit of the ULFA. He was with the others involved in the grenade attack on Wednesday last.”

The prime accused in the grenade attack, according to the special police source, is Bijay Asom who is at large. The State police force is on his trail.

The city police commissioner said that it’s a trying time for the ULFA because of cash crunch and lack of fresh recruitment. “The situation has made the outfit go for a bid to mobilize its old cadres to form an over ground organization as part of the much touted seven-sister organization. The old cadres bring youths for the joining the ULFA and infuse in them the ideology of the outfit. The outfit is trying to garner sympathy with its separatist ideology. Urban ULFA cadres blend together with the civil society and help shape such attacks, besides keeping in touch with top leaders of the outfit,” the police officer said, adding: “The well-designed plan smacks of a think-tank working hard behind it.”

Kumar further said that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is monitoring the situation and in direct touch with the police here. “It has asked us to arrest all those involved in the blast,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amrit Ballab Goswami, Indramani Bora and Chinmoy Lahkar were produced before the CJM Court here on Saturday. Each of them was sent to 10-day police remand.
