Tonkeswar Hazarika Borbayan honoured with Dr Jagannath Mahanta Award

GAURISAGAR: "Dr Jagannath Mahanta was a veteran scholar in theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of xattriya dance. He has enriched xattriya culture of Assam with his remarkable contribution," said Saradi Saikia, noted xattriya artiste, recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi award and former secretary of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra while conferring the Dr. Jagannath Mahanta Memorial Award to veteran xattriya exponent Tonkeswar Hazarika Borbayan of Kamalabari Xatra, Titabor held at Amguri Natya Mandir on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering, she urged upon to the upcoming artistes of xattriya dance to read The xattriya dances of Assam, A critical and analytical study, the remarkable book of Dr Jagannath Mahanta.

Receiving the award, Tonkeswar Hazarika Borbayan expressed his gratitude to the organizers as well as Dr.Jagannath Mahanta's family and said that it would inspire him to dedicate his life for the uplift of xattriya dance .The award carries a citation, xarai, memento and cash Rs 10,000.

Earlier the programme started with lighting of earthen lamp before the portrait of Dr Jagannath Mahanta by Paramanonda Kakoti Borbayan, Kamalabari Xatra, Titabor. Thereafter, a cultural function was held. Dr Anil Kumar Gogoi inaugurated it.
