Shillong: United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate for the Selsella Legislative Assembly seat, Sayeedullah Nongrum is optimistic of winning the by-polls.

Questions have been raised on how the three-time legislator from Rajabala constituency is adjusting to a new Assembly constituency. In an interaction with The Sentinel, Nongrum said, “The delimitation process left me bereft when half of my voters were tagged with Selsella constituency”. He said that 10,000 odd electorates were attached to the new delimited Assembly segment.

Stating that he has worked hard in the new constituency that he aspired to represent, Nongrum acknowledged that it will be a tough fight in this upcoming by-polls. The widow of late Congress MLA Clement Marak is in the fray, so is another NPP women candidate.

Sources said that Atul Mark may join the fray. Going by reports, all the aspirants have already hit the road in a formidable manner.

There is every scope of polarization of votes in this constituency that goes to polls. There are huge religious and ethnic factors that will determine the outcome of the results. There are Garos, Hajongs, Bengalis and with the type of socio-economic situation, it may turn out to be a potboiler.
