SHILLONG: The 22nd annual convention of the Warjri clan was held at Mawkneng village, South West Khasi Hills recently. Thousands of kinsfolk of the Warjri clan attended the convention for social interaction and cultural deliberation by clan elders.

The president of the clan organization Seng Kur Warjri reminded the kinfolks of the need to strengthen the clan and inspire other Khasi clans for cultural awakening. In this regard, he stated: “In the past one of the Assam politicians encouraged the Assamese men to marry the Khasi ladies with the motive to assimilate the local people with the major community, and offer reward for the same.

Fortunately, the Khasi leaders of that period had resisted and fought for a separate State until it was achieved.” He urged the people to be aware of the impending danger of political and cultural hegemony by the major community from the neighbourhood and from mainland India. He said that personal integrity is one solution to safeguard the interest of the clan and the Khasi community as a whole.

As part of the annual gathering of the Warjri clan, a few meritorious kinfolks were felicitated. One among them is Riewad V Warjri, a retired envoy of the Government of India who had served in various countries all over the world. The others are Dakynmawlang Warjri for securing 1st class with distinction in B. E.
