Withdraw Citizenship (Amendment) Bill: AASU

LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur AASU staged a protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the rural areas of the district in order to create awareness among the masses against it. On Tuesday evening, the Saboti-Lilabari Branch unit of AASU, with the joint endeavour of Ujjalpur Yuva Sangha, took out a torchlight rally in the Saboti-Lilabari area of the district along the VIP Road to demand the scrapping of the controversial Bill. Several organizations and institutions, people of Chandmari, Ujjalpur, Janakpur, Balijan and Napam villages took part in the rally.

Just before initiating the protest rally, North Lakhimpur regional AASU president Pranjit Gogoi became vocal against the Bill, terming it a communally motivated issue of the BJP government to regain power in the upcoming elections. Many eminent personalities of the area, including social activist Padmeswar Chutia, retired SI of Education Department, Jiten Saikia, Lakhimpur district AASU secretary Dhanmoni Dutta and North Lakhimpur regional ASSU secretary Punam Jyoti Burhagohain were present in the protest programme.
