4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Parts Of Assam And Meghalaya, No Damages Reported

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Assam and Meghalaya on February 20, with the epicenter located in North Garo Hills. No damage or injuries reported as of now.

GUWAHATI: An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale hit some parts of Assam, including Guwahati, and the state of Meghalaya on the morning of February 20. Tremors were felt at around 11:32 AM, causing people to rush out of buildings and take shelter in the open.

The epicenter of the quake was pin-pointed to the North Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, as per the National Center of Seismology. The tremors were intense enough to be experienced in different areas, which caused alarm among the residents. There have been no reports of damage to property or injury as of now.

In January 2025, the Northeastern region of India, which is situated in seismic zone V, experienced a total of 11 earthquakes, the maximum being eight in Manipur. The National Center for Seismology reported that a total of 340 earthquakes were experienced within India and the neighboring regions during this month, of which 334 were within the specified coordinates.

Seismic activity was predominantly in the Hindu Kush area, North India, and the Northeast. Of the earthquakes that were recorded, 59% were of magnitudes 3.0-3.9, and 30% were of magnitudes 4.0-4.9. Four earthquakes of magnitudes 6.0-6.9 were recorded outside the given grid, and one major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 was recorded in Tibet. The central and western regions of India experienced little seismic activity, with no records from the southern and eastern regions for this time.
