PASIGHAT: Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu has promised immediate action against illegal encroachments on the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary after concerns raised by Pasighat West MLA Ninong Ering. It is being reported that illegal activities like cattle grazing, erection of sheds and cultivation have been done by those from Assam that are seriously affecting the sanctity of this very fragile sanctuary.
In response to the issue, Khandu stated, “I will soon discuss this matter with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to find a resolution.” He confirmed receipt of a detailed letter from MLA Ering and has instructed the East Siang District Deputy Commissioner to conduct an investigation and provide a comprehensive report.
Ering is a strong advocate of preserving the sanctuary. He has raised alarm over increased encroachments. In letters to both the state Chief Ministers, he underlined that these acts are against the agreements reached in inter-state boundary discussions held in January 2023, wherein new settlements were not to be allowed.
“Assam officials have allowed cattle sheds and cultivation within the sanctuary, causing distress among sanctuary staff and local villagers,” Ering noted.
This important ecological site-the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, which stands on the islands of the river Siang/Brahmaputra-is named after the late Dr. Daying Ering. The sanctuary has been under constant threat of encroachment, and Ering has approached the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in the past. The conservationists hope that the cooperation between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam will strengthen the protection of this critical habitat.
