IMPHAL: The central government has imposed President’s rule in Manipur after the BJP was unable to select a new chief minister following N Biren Singh’s resignation. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an official notification confirming the decision.
“I, Droupadi Murmu, President of India, have received a report from the Governor of the State of Manipur and after considering the report and other information received by me, I am satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the Government of that State cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India (hereinafter referred to as the Constitution)," read the notification.
Despite multiple discussions, the party leadership could not reach a consensus on a new leader. BJP’s northeast in-charge Sambit Patra held several meetings with state legislators but failed to finalize a candidate.
Over the past two days, he also met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla twice, along with state party president A Sharda Devi, but no decision was reached, leading to President’s rule in the state.
This follows the recent resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh from his post a day before an important Assembly session, on Sunday, who submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. However, the Governor requested him to continue as the caretaker CM until further decisions are made.
Meanwhile, the Governor declared his previous order summoning the 7th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly as "null and void."
