Itanagar: In a major breakthrough for healthcare access in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, the Bakin Pertin General Hospital (BPGH) at Pasighat in East Siang district, has successfully conducted its first-ever AV fistula surgery for a chronic kidney failure patient.

This milestone spares patients the burden of traveling long distances to cities like Dibrugarh, Guwahati, or Naharlagun for such procedures. The surgery was performed on Friday by renowned urologist and surgeon Dr Kapang Yirang. BPGH medical superintendent Dr Yater Ringu Darang shared the news on Sunday, calling it a ‘significant development’ that will benefit patients requiring long-term or regular dialysis. “Patients from eastern Arunachal no longer need to travel to Dibrugarh or Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun for AV fistula surgeries. We are now equipped to carry out the procedure right here in Pasighat,” Dr Darang said.

The patient, Yachit Samiyor from Manigong in Shi-Yomi district, a remote area bordering Tibet, had previously sought treatment in multiple hospitals, including Dibrugarh, HEEMA Hospital in Itanagar, and TRIHMS in Naharlagun, but without success.

Dr Yirang, reflecting on the case, said he advised the patient to come to BPGH Pasighat during a recent visit to TRIHMS.

“She had been suffering for quite some time and had traveled extensively seeking treatment. I knew the surgical equipment required was available at BPGH, so I guided her here, and the procedure went smoothly,” he stated with evident satisfaction.
