ITANAGAR: A massive landslide in the Mompani region of Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh, near the Indo-China border, has brought road movement to a complete halt.
The landslide, which struck on Wednesday, has severely impacted civilian travel and suspended army convoy movements along the border.
According to officials, approximately 10 meters of road have been washed away, disrupting a crucial lifeline for both the residents of Anjaw district and security personnel stationed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The damage has effectively cut off communication with one of India’s most remote districts near the China border, raising concerns over logistical support and emergency response efforts.
The roadblock has also halted army convoys heading toward strategic locations like Walong and Kibithu, key areas along the Indo-China border. Officials indicated that restoration work could take time, as additional land acquisition might be required to ensure a stable and long-term repair of the damaged route.
Warnings about the deteriorating road conditions had been issued earlier this week. On Tuesday, Anjaw Deputy Commissioner Millo Kojin had advised commuters to exercise caution, following reports from the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) highlighting significant road damage in the region.
Efforts are now underway to restore connectivity as quickly as possible. Authorities are implementing short-term measures to ease movement while working on long-term solutions to strengthen the route. Given the road’s strategic importance for national security, immediate intervention is expected to prevent prolonged disruptions.
