
ITANAGAR: A minor girl who was reportedly sold into human trafficking was successfully rescued by Tinsukia Police and the Women Police Station (WPS), Itanagar, in a joint operation.
The victim was rescued from Chello Aaw's home in Lobby, Itanagar, during the operation, which was led by Inspector Nich Rupa of WPS Itanagar. On December 26, 2024, the victim was allegedly intercepted by her aunt, Sunita Bumis, and taken away from her cousin.
According to reports, the victim was sold for Rs 2,00,000. The child was said to be in stable condition after undergoing a medical test following the rescue. Searches are being conducted to identify and capture trafficking network members.
The Itanagar Police's Superintendent of Police (SP) urged citizens to avoid hiring children as domestic helpers and stressed the value of raising public awareness. He emphasized the necessity of rigorous police verification when employing workers in order to guarantee safety and reduce the possibility of fraud or exploitation.
This operation demonstrates the continuous efforts made by law enforcement to prevent human trafficking and protect those who are at risk.
In September 2025, Jalukbari police arrested a woman for kidnapping a 12-year-old girl and attempting to sell her in Guwahati. The woman, identified as Lakhi Dihidar, had taken the girl from Garchuk with the intention of selling her in Bongaigaon, after luring her with the promise of gifts.
Residents grew suspicious when they saw the woman with the girl in Jalukbari and alerted the authorities. Upon questioning, the girl revealed she had been forcefully taken, while the woman claimed she took pity on the girl and did not mean harm. The woman was later handed over to Garchuk police.
