Itanagar: In a determined effort to tackle drug-related offences and improve public safety, the Naharlagun Police have achieved remarkable success in 2024 under their initiative, Operation Dawn.

The focused campaign has brought significant results, including a surge in the detection of drug cases, an increase in arrests, and the seizure of large quantities of illegal substances.

Operation Dawn marked a turning point in combating narcotic-related crimes in the Capital region, Naharlagun superintendent of police (SP) Mihin Gambo said in a statement here on Saturday.

The efforts led to a noticeable improvement compared to the previous year, as more cases were detected, and stricter action was taken against drug peddlers. These actions also resulted in the confiscation of a significantly larger quantity of contraband substances, demonstrating the effectiveness of the initiative, Gambo said.

The SP informed that a total of 41 NDPS cases were registered during the year with the arrest of 91 peddlers.

“Police also seized 588.42 grams of Heroin along with 7042.5 grams of cannabis, 48 grams of Lorazepam and 233.81 grams of Morphine from various peddlers,” Gambo said.

The crackdown on drug-related offences has had a far-reaching impact on the overall crime scenario in the region. Many thefts and burglaries, which were often linked to individuals struggling with drug addiction, have seen a sharp decline. This reduction in property crimes has contributed to an enhanced sense of safety and security among the residents of Naharlagun and nearby areas, the SP said.

As many as 152 cases of theft and burglaries were registered in various police stations in the region, he added. In addition to enforcement, the police carried out extensive awareness campaigns under Operation Dawn.

The campaigns were organized across schools, colleges, and rehabilitation centers, aiming to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse.

The initiatives inspired many individuals battling addiction to seek help and begin de-addiction programs at rehabilitation facilities. The support provided through these efforts has brought a renewed sense of hope and stability to families affected by addiction, Gambo added.

Operation Dawn has not only curbed the supply of illegal drugs but also prevented countless young people from falling into addiction. The combined efforts of the police and the community have played a pivotal role in creating a safer and more secure environment in the region.

The SP commended the unwavering dedication of the police teams who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of Operation Dawn. He acknowledged the contributions of Naharlagun SDPO Rishi Longdo, along with other officers, including Inspectors Krishnendu Dev, Kipa Hamak, T M Nekam and Torun Mai, for their outstanding efforts in maintaining law and order throughout the year.

Gambo also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Naharlagun for their consistent support and cooperation.

He highlighted the crucial role of community involvement in the fight against drug abuse and urged everyone to continue working together as the police prepare to launch Operation Dawn 2.0 this year. The upcoming phase aims to build on the successes of the past year and deliver even greater results in the ongoing battle against drugs and crime, he added.
