ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested two wanted accused in separate cases from West Bengal and Assam on Friday.
In August 2024, multiple written complaints were received at Naharlagun police station alleging that Debashish Kar, a jeweller operating a shop at G-Extension, Naharlagun, had fraudulently collected gold ornaments from customers under the pretext of repair and remaking, Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Mihin Gambo said on Sunday.
He said after accumulating a substantial quantity of gold jewellery, the accused fled Naharlagun and remained in hiding across different states, frequently changing locations and mobile numbers.
A case was registered at Naharlagun police station under Section 409 of the Indian Penal Code. The SP said sustained technical and conventional surveillance was mounted, and the accused was finally traced to Kolkata.
A police team led by sub-inspector N Rama and constables Sanu Raj and B Mitkong with assistance from West Bengal police arrested 55-year-old Kar from Habra, West Bengal, the official said. The accused was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Parganas, Barasat, where a two-day transit remand was granted.
In another case, a woman lodged a complaint alleging that an amount of Rs 4 lakh had been fraudulently withdrawn from her bank account by one Srinu Chekka.
Under the guidance of Naharlagun police station officer-in-charge K Dev, police undertook technical and conventional investigations, and the accused was traced to Guwahati, Assam.
A police team led by sub-inspector BP Singh and constables Dani Ampi, A Perme and T Nikia with the support from Assam police apprehended the accused 33-year-old Chekka from Ambari, Guwahati, and the SP said. He said the accused was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup, Guwahati, and subsequently brought to Naharlagun for further investigation.
