Arunachal Police bust interstate drug racket, arrest four

In a major crackdown on interstate drug trafficking, Chimpu Police seized 4.497 kg of cannabis and arrested four individuals involved in an organized drug network from Assam.

ITANAGAR: In a major crackdown on interstate drug trafficking, Chimpu Police here, have seized 4.497 kg of cannabis (ganja) and arrested four individuals linked to an organised drug network operating from Assam, a senior police official said.

This operation follows their recent success in dismantling a major heroin network, which led to the seizure of six heroin packets and the arrest of five individuals, he added.

On March 17, during a routine naka checking at the Chimpu check post here, police intercepted a motorcycle and discovered 1.440 kg of cannabis concealed under the seat, Capital Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohit Rajbir Singh informed.

The motorcycle’s occupants—Lijom Dulom (20) from Sikarijo in Upper Subansiri district and Bhai Dobin alias Tumjum (19) from Airport Colony in the same district, were immediately taken into custody. Both reside in Chimpu-I village, here.

During interrogation, the duo admitted to procuring the contraband from Tokobari in Assam’s Biswanath district, prompting a follow-up operation to dismantle the supply chain, Singh said.

Acting on intelligence inputs, police arrested two more individuals on March 20 including, Narayan Mahanand (25) and Sanjay Kumar (23), both residents of Boroi Bagan in the district. Authorities also seized an additional 3.057 kg of cannabis, two mobile phones, and a motorcycle during the operation, the SP said.

A case has been registered at Chimpu Police Station under the NDPS Act, and investigations are ongoing to track down the main supplier behind the illegal trade, Singh stated.

The successful operation was led by Itanagar SDPO Kengo Dirchi, along with officers Vibu Krishna and Vivek Maurya, under the close supervision of the SP. The team also included Inspector N Nishant, Sub-Inspectors T Bakhang, T Nabam, and S K Jha, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Manish Kumar and G Sangey, among others. Singh acknowledged the crucial support extended by the Chimpu-Gohpur Market Committee and Chimpu Youth Organization in the operation. Capital Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.

The department remains committed to proactive enforcement and public safety, ensuring a drug-free society through stringent action against narcotics networks, Singh added.
