ITANAGAR: Capital Police have achieved a significant breakthrough in their ongoing fight against narcotics, successfully dismantling an interstate drug trafficking network operating in Chimpu. Two drug peddlers were apprehended, and a substantial quantity of suspected heroin, cash, and a vehicle used in distribution were seized.

The operation, a key component of the Arunachal Pradesh Police’s “Operation Dawn”, which aims to combat drug abuse and trafficking through proactive policing and intelligence-driven operations, resulted in the seizure of 60.4 grams of suspected heroin, with an estimated street value of Rs 500,000 when sold vial-wise, Rs 40,000 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales, and a two-wheeler used for distribution. Acting on credible intelligence inputs, a team led by SDPO Itanagar DySP Kengo Dirchi, OC PS Itanagar Vivek Maurya, OC PS Chimpu U. Vibu Krishna, SI Tamo Bakhang, and the Chimpu PS team conducted a swift operation on March 20, 2025.

The first arrest was made in Chimpu when Bikash Barman, a habitual drug peddler, was caught while attempting to sell heroin. One packet of heroin and a two-wheeler used for trafficking were recovered from his possession. During interrogation, Bikash revealed that he was working under a local supplier, Junaki Boje, alias “Didi”, who was reportedly in possession of additional narcotics. Based on actionable intelligence provided by Bikash Barman, the police team raided Junaki Boje’s residence in Bidi Bida village, Zoo Road. The search led to the recovery of four additional packets of heroin weighing approximately 50 grams and Rs 40,000 in cash suspected to be drug proceeds.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the syndicate sourced heroin from Assam and neighbouring states and distributed it across the Capital Region through a network of peddlers like Bikash Barman. The syndicate is suspected of playing a significant role in driving substance abuse among local youth.
