ARUNACHAL PRADESH:  Arunachal Pradesh has reached a significant milestone by securing the esteemed Geographical Indication (GI) tag for three of its indigenous products, as confirmed by reports on Thursday.

The state's successful bid for the GI tag encompassed three distinctive products: Yak Churpi, Khamti rice, and Tangsa textile. This momentous achievement was officially announced by authorities following the GI Registry's approval in Chennai on Wednesday.

Dr. Mihir Sarkar, Director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's National Research Centre (NRC), shed light on the unique attributes of these newly recognized products. He elaborated, stating, "Churpi is prepared from the milk of Arunachali yak, which is a unique yak breed found in West Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh."

Highlighting the broader significance of this recognition, Dr. Sarkar emphasized that "Yak Churpi" is a naturally fermented milk product derived from the milk of these special yak breeds. The Brokpas, tribal yak pastoralists, are the custodians of this exceptional breed, engaging in seasonal migrations with their yaks to higher altitudes during the summer and descending to mid-altitude mountainous regions in the winter months.

The application for GI registration of this distinctive yak product was initiated by the ICAR-NRC on Yak in December 2021, signaling a concerted effort to preserve and celebrate the unique heritage and contributions of Arunachal Pradesh's indigenous products on a national and international scale.

Earlier in the state, actor Randeep Hooda, who is known for his work in ‘Sarbjit’, ‘Sultan’, ‘Jannat 2’, ‘Extraction’, ‘Laal Rang’ and ‘Highway’, recently carried out a clean-up drive in Arunachal Pradesh’s Mago village. The actor also spent time with the locals and imbibed the culture of the place as he urged everyone to keep the mountains clean. Speaking about the same Randeep shared, “My visit to Arunachal Pradesh was surreal and it is one of the cleanest places I have ever been to! During our visit I spent some time with the locals and the tourists there to understand more about the place, though I have never seen something so beautiful as Arunachal but there are some parts where we can make a change by spreading awareness of cleanliness and its importance.”
