Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Police have apprehended a drug peddler and seized cannabis weighing 1111.8 grams worth Rs 20,000 (approx.), a senior police official said.
Acting on a reliable intelligence that an interstate drug peddler suspected of bringing cannabis from Assam and selling it to local youths in the Itanagar Capital Region, a police team led by Naharlagun police station officer-in-charge inspector Krishnendu Dev was formed, Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Mihin Gambo said.
He said the team acted promptly to prevent the peddler from fleeing or disposing of the contraband.
The team reached the suspect’s residence at G-Sector, Naharlagun, he said, adding that the suspect Stephen Gungte (25) was found outside his house.
Gambo said the police team secured the premises and Naharlagun executive magistrate Khoda Bath, was called to oversee the search operation.
During the search, 4 pouches of cannabis weighing 56.8 grams were recovered from a black handbag carried by Gungte, the SP said.
Police also conducted a search of his residence which resulted in recovery of 81 pouches of suspected cannabis weighing 1055 grams and 250 empty plastic pouches, indicating preparation for distribution.
In total 1111.8 grams were seized and sealed in accordance with the NDPS Act in the presence of the magistrate and witnesses, Gambo said.
The SP said Gungte has been taken into custody and a case has been registered under relevant Sections of the NDPS Act, and legal proceedings are underway.
“We remain committed to combating the drug menace and protecting the youth from substance abuse,” Gambo said and appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station and join hands in eradicating the drug menace from our community.
