Itanagar: Colonel Ponung Doming, a pioneering officer from Arunachal Pradesh, has been awarded the prestigious Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) for her exceptional service in the Indian Army.

She leads a unit building a crucial high-altitude road in Ladakh’s Demchok sector, connecting the military’s remote outpost at Fukche, just 3 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Her team is also upgrading the Nyoma advanced landing ground near the LAC into a full-fledged fighter jet base.

As the first woman from Arunachal Pradesh to achieve the rank of Colonel, Ponung Doming has consistently broken barriers in her illustrious career. A civil engineering graduate from Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra, she joined the Army in 2008 as a lieutenant.

Rising rapidly, she became a major within four and a half years and served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2014.
