Arunachal ramps up waste management drive

ITANAGAR: As part of the ongoing awareness drive on the Arunachal Pradesh Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Bye-Laws 2023, residents of Namsai township were informed on Monday that a nominal user fee will soon be introduced for door-to-door waste collection to ensure the sustainability of waste management services.
The awareness programme, held at Satsang Nagar Community Hall, saw active participation from residents of Reliance Colony, Itabhatta, and Satsang Nagar I, II, and III.
Urban development department executive engineer Mosum Sema, who is also the member secretary of Namsai district urban development agency (DUDA), highlighted the critical need for proper waste segregation into dry and wet categories.
She explained that wet waste can be repurposed for composting or livestock feed, while dry waste must be handed over to designated DUDA sanitation vehicles.
Sema noted that regular cleanliness drives in the colonies have already led to noticeable improvements, but warned against dumping garbage into drains, which undermines sanitation efforts.
She also confirmed that although no user fees had been collected until now, the new charge aligns with the provisions of the updated bye-laws.
Namsai deputy commissioner C R Khampa, who is also the chairman of DUDA, in his address, stressed that every household produces multiple types of waste that require proper segregation.
Reinforcing the message that ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness,’ the DC urged families to take collective responsibility in keeping their environment clean and green.
