ITANAGAR: The Forest Department rescued an injured rare black panther from the Roing-Tezu highway, near the Paya area in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. Officials stated that the animal is currently receiving treatment at the Roing mini-zoo in Lower Dibang Valley.
It has been reported that the black panther sustained severe head injuries after being struck by a high-speed vehicle. The animal was hit while crossing the road.
Roing DFO (Wildlife) Mito Rumi stated, “Upon receiving information about the black panther, a team was dispatched immediately to rescue it and bring it to the Roing mini-zoo for treatment.”
Rumi also mentioned that the panther was taken to the veterinary hospital, and after a successful medical procedure, it has been returned to the mini-zoo.
The DFO further stated that officials will continue to monitor the black panther's recovery, adding, "The animal is stable for now."
The black panther is the melanistic (dark brown) variant of the leopard (Panthera pardus) and the jaguar (Panthera onca). Despite the excess of black pigment, their characteristic rosettes remain visible.
Black panthers, or melanistic leopards, have a condition that leads to an overproduction of black pigment, resulting in darker fur.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, a carcass of a Black Panther was recovered at Manas National Park. The news of the death of a Black Panther at the World Heritage Site of Assam's Manas National park has created a sensation among the people of the nearby area of Manas National Park.
On Thursday, the Black Panther's body was found not too far from the Bahbari Range's main gate. The forest officials of Manas National Park recovered it from there.
