TAWANG: With extreme weather challenges during winter, Tawang District Commissioner (DC) Kanki Darang has issued an advisory to ensure public safety. The guidelines are on precautionary measures for tourists and residents, especially in high-altitude areas prone to harsh conditions.
Travelers heading to famous places, such as Bumla Pass, Shongetser Lake, PT Tso, and Sela Pass, are advised to check weather and road reports before heading out. Sharp and extreme variations in the weather conditions, coupled with heavy snowfall, icy roads, and deep drifts, can easily endanger the safety of a traveler.
Traveling when such extreme weather conditions exist can lead to accidents. Non-skid chains on tires should be provided for each vehicle for smooth travel along the snow-covered roads.
Health precautions have also been emphasized. Visitors susceptible to high-altitude sickness or those with pre-existing health conditions are advised not to visit places like Bumla and Sela Pass, where the extreme environment may exacerbate health conditions. Travelers are also encouraged to pack adequate warm clothing, emergency kits, and communication devices in preparation for unexpected situations.
The district administration has issued strict warnings against stepping onto frozen lakes. The ice may be unstable, and too thin to bear the weight of human beings, and it may prove disastrous for human life. So, tourists should avoid such behavior and emphasize safety.
In emergencies, the advisory highlights the need to adhere to the instructions of local authorities, tour operators, guides, and rescue teams. Cooperation with these teams ensures that responses to incidents will be swift and effective.
The DC has also asked stakeholders, such as the Inner Line Permit issuing authorities in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Tezpur, and the Bhalukpong EAC, to enlighten tourists about the guidelines. Such concerted efforts would help in keeping visitors better prepared for challenges on their way.
These measures highlight preparedness and vigilance in the winter season. Following the advisory will allow tourists to explore the beauty of high-altitude destinations in Tawang while minimizing the risk posed by extreme weather conditions.
