DELHI: In a concerning incident late Monday night, two students from Arunachal Pradesh, Nabam Barka and Tadam Debom, were assaulted by local residents in Delhi following a verbal dispute. Both students are enrolled at Dyal Singh College, part of Delhi University.
The incident was reported to have started as students were walking some friends home when they were bombarded with racial insults from some locals. The Arunachali students responded in protest against the insults, which degenerated into a heated argument and finally a physical altercation.
The situation escalated as more locals joined in the attack on the students, resulting in injuries to both individuals. They were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation, where they underwent tests, including a CT scan, to assess their injuries.
Speaking in a video posted on social media, Barka disclosed that he had been hit on the head and suffered bleeding and urged the intervention of the Arunachal Pradesh government.
Following the incident, the Arunachal Students Union of Delhi (ASUD) has met with the special police unit for the northeast under the Delhi Police to seek a solution to the issue. The union is also helping the victims prepare legal actions. Moreover, ASUD has appealed to the public to stop spreading misinformation about the incident so that tensions will not be further escalated.
