CHIRANG: A Home Guard personnel identified as Bahar Alam was reportedly attacked by police officials in Roumari in Assam's Chirang district, leaving him critically injured. The attack took place on the night of February 12 when Alam was accosted by a night patrol team of the Roumari Police Outpost while he was resting at his residence in Chourabari.
Though he identified himself as a Home Guard, Alam was reportedly beaten with wires by the officers. He was able to make it to the Home Guard barracks in Dhaligaon, where he was discovered with several wounds and deep cuts. Shockingly, he was denied medical care the entire night, suffering from a lot of pain.
The situation only changed after a group of reporters intervened at approximately 11 am on February 13, leading the police to finally provide medical treatment. The delay in offering assistance has attracted significant criticism, with serious questions raised regarding police accountability and possible human rights abuses.
This incident has sparked outrage, with many people raising serious concerns about the treatment of a Home Guard officer who serves alongside the police. It is reported that this is not an isolated incident, as another Home Guard officer was also allegedly attacked by Roumari police in a similar incident previously. The recent widespread criticism underscores the necessity of a proper inquiry into police behavior and the safeguarding of officers who are employed in law enforcement capacities.
