ITANAGAR: In a significant push for wildlife conservation and sustainable livestock practices, an awareness programme on ‘Sensitisation Against the Hunting of Wild Animals’ and the semi-intensive mithun rearing system was conducted at Kimin in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Organized by the Kimin Mithun Farmers Club in collaboration with the Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers Federation (JMMF) from Siang district, and with technical support from the Nagaland-based ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, the event aimed to address the ecological consequences of indiscriminate hunting and promote modern, sustainable approaches to mithun farming.

The programme saw active participation from mithun farmers, community leaders, and local residents. Discussions focused on balancing traditional practices with ecological preservation and improving livestock safety through better rearing methods. JMMF chairman Tadang Tamut, raised alarm over the growing number of attacks on mithuns by wild dogs and predators.

“The root cause lies in our continued hunting of natural prey species. When the natural food chain is disrupted, predators turn to domestic livestock like mithuns,” he said and added that to ensure the safety of livestock and to protect the ecological balance, it is crucial that people put an end to hunting.

The event underlined the urgency of sensitising local communities about the broader environmental impacts of hunting, while advocating for semi-intensive rearing systems that enhance both animal welfare and productivity. The organisers expressed hope that such initiatives will lead to lasting behavioural change and foster a more sustainable model of mithun farming in harmony with nature.
