BRO to be moved for early reconstruction of Balemu Bridge

ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday assured to ask the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) authorities to immediately construct the Balemu Bridge in West Kameng district which collapsed.

The under construction steel superstructure bridge at the vital Orang-Kalaktang-Shergoan-Rupa Tenga (OKSRT) road reportedly collapsed near Balemu on November 26 last year. Four labourers were also injured in the accident. The OKSRT road is being executed by Border Road Task Force (BRTF) of the BRO.

Responding to a Zero Hour discussion in the Assembly brought by JDU member Dorjee Wangdi Kharma, the Chief Minister informed that he had talked with the BRO authorities who informed that they are investigating the reason of the collapse and accordingly the flaws would be rectified after unearthing the cause.

Kharma also drew the Chief Minister’s attention that despite his invitation to the BRO authorities for a meeting to discuss the matter besides an invitation by the West Kameng Deputy Commissioner and the District Development Committee, the officials never turned up.

Khandu assured the House that the State government would take up the matter with the BRO authorities for expediting early construction of the vital bridge and would ask them to respond to invitations from elected MLA and district authorities.

The bridge is being executed by ‘Competent Infrastructure’, a Guwahati-based civil firm under sub-contract terms. The firm, however, reasoned that the low intensity earthquake that had occurred on November 21 last year, could be the reason for collapse of this bridge.
